A media pass or press pass is a credential that a photographer, journalist or reporter can use to help gain access to events. For example, if you are a sports photographer and want to get on the field at a college or professional game, you will need a media pass. Sports photographers can gain a media pass by emailing or contacting the SID of a college or event. SID stands for sports information director. They are the main person the deals with media credentials at sports events or a college they work for. They can help guide you on how to get a media pass or even give you one depending on your situation.
How to get a media pass.
Have a professional and good looking portfolio. The event manager or SID will not want to give you one or help you obtain one if you don't have a good portfolio.
Work with a local newspaper or blog. This can help you seem credible and professional. This also can benefit the event because the local newspaper or blog will give the event exposure.
A professional email can also help you get a media pass. If the email you send to the event manager is sloppy and doesn't have your portfolio included, they won't pay any attention too it.
Have a following. If you market your freelancing services or photography business through social media. Having a following can help give you credibility and the event manager will be more inclined to give you a media pass. Be sure to put your socials into your email.
Lastly, advertise your services. There is a small chance a local blog or newspaper will look for photographers to cover an event happening in your area. If you have a good portfolio and advertising. They may come to you will a job offer which could get you access to a media pass.
Don't be down if you cannot get anyone to give you a media pass or buy your services. Consistency and quality is key in the photographer industry.
